Signs to Replace Brake Pads, Tires & Refill Hydraulic Brake Fluid for Electric Scooters

1. Signs your brake pads need replacement

  1. High-pitched squealing noise every time you brake. Squeaking from water or dust is temporary; continuous squeal means friction material is wearing thin.
  2. Braking distance gets longer, stopping power drops noticeably. You need to squeeze the lever harder to slow down.
  3. Friction material thickness ≤1mm (visible through caliper window). This is the critical replacement threshold.
  4. Harsh metal grinding sound: the friction layer is completely gone. Metal grinds against the rotor, which will permanently damage your brake disc.
  5. Uneven pad wear or brake pulling to one side during deceleration.

2. Signs your scooter tire needs replacement

  1. Tread grooves are almost worn flat, tread depth is too shallow. Wet-road grip drops sharply, easy to skid.
  2. Visible cracks, crazing or cuts on tire sidewall. Dry rot happens after long exposure to sun & cold. Risk of sudden blowout.
  3. Frequent slow punctures, constant air leaking even after adding sealant.
  4. Bulges on tire surface: internal cords are damaged. Stop riding immediately.
  5. Deformed tire shape, uneven wear, wobbling while rolling.

3. Signs you need to add / bleed hydraulic brake fluid

  1. Brake lever feels spongy and soft; lever travels nearly all the way to handlebar before brakes kick in (air bubbles inside hydraulic circuit).
  2. Brake fluid reservoir level drops below the minimum mark.
  3. Visible fluid leaks around caliper, hose or master cylinder; wet oily traces on brake parts.
  4. Dark, muddy, contaminated brake fluid. Old fluid absorbs moisture and reduces braking performance.

Important note: Do NOT mix mineral oil and DOT brake fluid. Confirm the brake system type before refilling.

Safety Reminder

Brake and tire failures are major safety hazards. Inspect these components regularly. Replace worn parts or top up brake fluid at the first warning sign. Never ride a scooter with leaking hydraulics, grinding brakes or cracked tires.
