Key Considerations When Replacing an Electric Scooter Controller with a Different Brand

Published on  Updated on

1. Voltage and Current Compatibility

  • The battery voltage must match the supported voltage range of the controller; otherwise, it may damage the controller or battery.

    • For example, a 72V battery must be paired with a 72V-compatible controller.

  • The maximum current output of the controller should align with the motor’s needs. If too low, the motor will be underpowered; if too high, it could overheat or damage the motor.

2. Motor Type Compatibility

  • Most electric scooters use brushless DC (BLDC) motors, so the controller must support this type.

  • The motor’s pole pair count must also match; mismatches will result in improper operation or failed rotation.

3. Wiring and Connector Compatibility

  • Phase wires (U/V/W) and Hall sensor wires (usually 5 wires) must be connected correctly.

    • Use a Hall tester or trial-and-error method to ensure the motor rotates smoothly and in the correct direction.

  • Check if the throttle, brake, lights, and display connectors are physically and electrically compatible.

4. Display/Instrument Compatibility

  • Many controllers are paired with specific displays (e.g., Votol, Liviae, JB, Yunli), and are not cross-compatible.

    • Replacing the controller often means you must also replace the matching display, or else you won’t be able to configure or monitor system parameters.

5. Feature Support Differences

  • Confirm whether the new controller supports the same features as the original, such as:

    • NFC unlocking

    • Bluetooth and app control

    • Cruise control

    • Regenerative braking (EBS/KERS)

⚠️ Common Issues and Solutions

Issue Possible Cause Suggested Fix
Motor spins weakly or only in idle Low current setting or motor not identified Check controller settings or re-run self-learning
Motor vibrates or overheats Incorrect wiring or unmatched pole count Adjust phase/Hall wire order
Display doesn’t light up Incompatible screen-controller pair Replace with compatible screen
Low top speed Controller limited or underpowered Check speed limits in parameters and adjust accordingly

🔧 Practical Advice

  • When purchasing a new controller, choose original or matched controller + display kits to avoid compatibility issues.

  • Always consult the wiring diagrams and manuals before installation.

  • If you're unfamiliar with electric wiring, it's best to have the replacement done.
